Study in Turkey #2.1: Interview

Hi guys!

Many of you asked me to write more about interview experience for Turkiye burslari /Turkey Scholarship. Here is a new post, dedicated only to interview questions. Please, write your comments to this post and share your interview experince. Don’t forget to write your country and level of studies. When I get enough comments, I will write down all your experiences in a form of a post. You can also subscribe to my blog, add me to Google circles and follow me on Facebook – Istanbul Konstantinopel. Like this, you will not miss any post and update.
Where and when are the Turkey Scholarship interviews held????
Firstly, let me tell you something about the time of interview. As you can see at the calendar for 2016, interviews will be held from April until June.

This means that every embassy will schedule their interviews according to their availability. I, for example had my interview at the end of May. If you live or study abroad (not in the country which passport you hold), the interview will be at the Turkish Embassy of the country, where you live at the moment (of course, only in case that in your application you’ve stated that you live/study abroad). In case that you already live/study in Turkey, you will probably have your interview in Ankara.
Usually the interviews are held at Turkish Embassies around the world. I’ve heard of some examples of Skype interviews  – especially in big countries, where it’s difficult to travel to the capital (where the embassy usually is). You will receive email or call from your embassy and they will inform you about exact time and date of your interivew. I advice you to take all the documents, which you uploaded in your application form, with you.
In case, that there is any mistake in your application form, like wrong spelled name/laste name, wrong passport number, etc, please inform the embassy staff during your interview.
Interview experience and questions
This is one of the most popular questions that I usually get from you: what will they ask me, how should I write my motivation letter???
Firstly, ask yourself: Why do I want to study in Turkey? Why is this important for me and my future career? How can this contribute to my career? If you can reply to all this questions, than you’ve probably written quite good motivation letter.
When it comes to interview, I have to say that for me, and as I know, for many other students, interview was a nice experience. Embassy staff and in some cases also special Turkiye burslari workers will ask you some questions. The language of interview can be ENGLISH. If you are fluent in Turkish, you can speak in Turkish. Depending on cuntry and foreign languages the staff speaks, interviews might be also held in outher languages.

So, what do they ask, what is important to them?? Actually similar questions that you already had to reply while applying online. Why do you want to study in Turkey? Why is this important for you and you future career? How can this contribute to your career?
They might also ask some specific questions related to your research topic (especially for MA and PhD candidates). Another question is – why have you chosen certain department and/or research topic? Why do you want to study this in Turkey.
Third topic can be relations between your country and Turkey. They can ask you something about history of your countries (of course, if there is something in common) or how can you contribute to better relations between your countries in case you win the scholarship.
How was your interview experience? Please, write a comment to this post and share it with others.

  4. Annonymous, don't worry. They never respond to people. It's very bad. For my case for instance, I was invited for interview with a wrong appointment. when I went to the embassy on the date that is mentioned in my email, i was informed that the judges have finished and left two days before. Since then up to now i have been trying to contact them via email but no response. I even got the phone number of the call center and called them straight to complain about my situation but they only promise to work on it but nothing. It's just bad. They would not have invited me and i would not have wasted may money and time to travel all the way to the embassy.

For my friend who lost his phone, please buy another line (sim) and go to the headquarters of your network provider with it and explain to them that you want the lost number back. They will charge you something but you will get your old number back.

    I greet you all.
Enjoy your studies Mr Spelayla G.

  5. Check a few comments down. You have a longer reply, but unfortunately they don't reply to everyone. The only thing you can do it to contact the Turkish Embassy in the country where you currently reside.

  7. Hi!

Out of curiosity; what exactly would happen if I opt to cancel my scholarship after the compulsory Turkish language course? Are there financial repercussions?

  8. Hey! This is the anon who asked about the scholarship cancellation. Thank you for the response.

Also, how safe is it to be in Istanbul right now? I'm quite concerned for my safety.

  10. Hi! Sorry for constantly writing new comments instead of replying to the thread, it doesn't seem to work for me.

Regarding the safety question, today's attack in Istanbul is something to consider.

Anyway, you've asked to share interview experiences. Here's mine:

I messed up from the moment I walked in. First of all, I walked into the interview room by accident. Was asked to leave — awful first impression. Anyway, they were very polite when I was called back in and we laughed off the incident.

My session lasted for twenty minutes, at most. It was nearing the end of the day and everyone was exhausted (understandable, really). As a result, I was not allowed to complete some of my answers.

Ten minutes into the interview, I was asked whether I'd consider studying something else. One of the interviewers (a pretty eminent Turkish professor, which I did not realise at the time) thought I would be better off studying his field of expertise. In fact, he asked me whether I'd overlooked his department during the application process. Fair point.

My interview questions were clearly spontaneous and different. Was asked detailed questions on my field of interest, for the most part. Nothing was based on the personal statement.

Apart from that, it went well. They were very amiable and keen despite being knackered.

Today I checked my application status and noticed that it says “pending review”. What does that mean. Is it something I should be worried about?

  14. Hi!
As far as I know, they have a limited number of scholarship for every country. Since there are not many applicants from your country (at least as far as I know), your chances may be high. Anyway, you have to meet the requirements (age, average grade…).
I am not sure, if they can share their contacts with you, but maybe they can share your contact with them.

  16. Hi Spelayla G. Thanks for the valuable information you are providing to us. I would like to ask, do you have any information about interview schedule in countries. I mean are these interviews done in stage for instance undergraduates or postgraduates separately in different months in the same country? Sorry for any confusion, English is not my first language. Thanks in advance.

  19. Hi!
I don't have any schedule. I think it also depends on each embassy and how busy are they. When I applied, the interviews were separated, firtsly MA and PhD and than undergrad. If you have doubts about this, it's better to contact Turkish Embassy in your country. They should know about this.
And don't worry, your English is great.

Suppose the scholarship committee selects me for a particular university, is it possible that the university can still reject me even after recommended by the scholarship committee? If yes then what could be the reasons?

  25. I went for my interview on the 18th of June this year. Interestingly, my interview lasted less than seven or so minutes. I was very worried because the interview of other applicants lasted relatively longer. Can you kindly guessed why this happened so? They asked questions like, why am still single, what field I intended studying(specific field which I answered Statistics in Medicine), whether my university was a good one or not(my university is the third best in my country). I would be glad if could fairly guess when my the interview results will be out, taking in consideration that the interview was conducted June 18. Thank you so much for your time. My name is Salpawuni.

  26. Hey!
I don't know why it was so short. Is it possible that you were one of the last candidates and that they were tired??
They asked you why were you still fingle?? I am sorry, but I think this kind of question shouldn't be asked in this kind of interveiws. Could you tell me your gender?

    Like

  27. Thank you for the timely reply and yes, they did ask me. I am actually male. As for your guess that they were probably tired, I would suspect so because one of them will often come out and ask how many were left to be interviewed? I also realized they were more interested in the verfication of applicants' documents than rigorous academic interview. In all, it is my hope that I get selected, in shaa Allaah.

  28. Hello guys.
My interview was scheduled for May 13 but that turned out to be wrong appointment.
After more than a month now they have finally called me to give me a phone interview. However, this could not be possible without putting high pressure on them by my daily calls to the call centre of the Turkiye Burslary.

As a phone call, the interview lasted about 5 min or so.
Questions were mainly about self-introduction, the intended program and future plans after studies.
    Fingers crossed.
    Thank you.
Please Spelayla, should I expect any change on my applicant page after the interview?

I'm Gildas from Benin, a PhD applicant
